The Areas Physical Therapy Finds Application

Physical therapy is important after a patient has been discharged, but there is still need for them to be attended to. There is a need especially if there are pain management and mobility issues. They work just as chiropractor do, but there are differences in their work.

Chiropractic care deals primarily with the adjustment or manipulation of the spine to ensure all the vertebrae are correctly aligned. It is a well-known fact among them that a properly aligned spine lead to the restoration of balance and health. They see it as the way to get rid of the pain.

Physical therapists, on the other hand, would manipulate the spine to get someone moving a joint that was otherwise unable to. You will notice a major difference between the two in the fact that chiropractors can adjust the spine. Physical therapists stop at manipulating it.
The physical therapists will be trained on ways of manipulating the spine, and they shall use the skill when needed. They will normally use mobilization techniques or passive movement to joints.

They will do some of the procedures such as range-of-motion exercises, ambulation exercises, coordination exercises, and muscle strengthening. They are also famous for the rehabilitation of stroke victims after they are discharged. Those how have suffered a stroke usually take a lot of time and effort to get back to normal functioning. The physical therapist’s work is to work toward getting them better regarding their physical condition, help them get back to doing their normal daily functions as well as they can, and to learn some new skills to replace those lost in the condition. Rehabilitation start when the patient is still hospitalized and progresses until no longer needed. Their houses have to be readjusted to fit their new needs.

They will need to learn coordination afresh, so that they can perform tasks on their own, and to regain their balance. They can be taught how to write properly, as an example.

They also get called in for osteoarthritis cases. They will apply heat therapy to reduce stiffness and muscle spasms. As for the pain, they will use cold therapy. They will also introduce aids such as walkers, canes, crutches, and splints to ensure the joints do not suffer more. They also know how to use massage therapy for the patients.
They will teach their patients stretching and strengthening exercises. They will sue these exercise to get those muscles that have been dormant ready for shock absorption. For the sake of the healthy cartilage, these exercises come in handy.

As for sports injuries, they shall use traction, water therapy, hot and cold packs, as part of the therapeutic exercises.
